MIA – It is not my fault

It was a Monday, the start of a week like so many others before. I will never forget. The air was heavy, the sky overcast, and a filthy rain pattered on the floor of what I called my lab. No one then could foresee that, soon, sunlight would be but a fond memory….

I had just finished building my own openPCR. In a few words let’s say that it’s a machine that lets the average person analyze DNA samples. I downloaded the plans from the Bio-Hack network because the city authorities had banned machines like this. The only city in the entire country prohibiting openPCR, and that is where I live…. In order to test my machine I decided to start with a simple experiment. I was a biochemistry student and wished to be a part of the bio hacking community in order to improve my skills and open my mind to learning methods beyond the traditional classroom setting.

In short, it was a Monday. Recently, I had found an interesting tutorial on Bio-Hack and was about to try producing a living organism based on bio-brick. I had just put my suit and my gas mask on when it all started, without warning.

First, it seemed like night was falling. Just like that, in the blink of an eye. But weirdly, the night was coming from the sea. Then, it started to move toward the city along the coast, and the more it filled the sky, the more we understood that this was not nightfall… It was a huge and dark cloud of fog, thick and frightening. It moved as if it were alive, driven by its own will. It advanced inexorably towards the residential areas before devouring them and making them disappear under its unnerving volutes. As it progressed across the city, everything became silent: the sirens of police cars, the screams of passers-by trying to escape, the horns of vehicles in gridlock, drivers panicking….

Everything stopped moving and fell silent as it crept.

Then, suddenly, it was on me. Its density became apparent as it hit my building with a large thud. Most of the windows were smashed under the pressure, and exploded into pieces. The fog rushed into the room, pervading it completely. I could barely see my gloved hands, lit only by the LEDs of my gas mask.

I just stood there for at least an hour, completely frozen with fear. It is only when the fog substantially cleared up that I could see the other side of the street again. It is also at that moment that I decided to get out of the rat hole my apartment just turned into.

Not until I reached the street and saw the dying streetlights, the flipped cars, the lifeless bodies, and the collapsed buildings did I really understand.

I realized then that nothing would ever be the same.

Smokey – Underground on ground level

I had been searching 3 long hours for the break in this pipe. I always hated working on Monday mornings. Who came up with THAT idea? The residents of the Southend area had reported various sewage issues. And for these cases, I was always the designated volunteer, because I never complain — well, at least, compared to the other guys…

88 feet underground, I was begrudgingly trudging through the muck, bumping into debris of all kinds, from organic filth to plastic, unable to identify the source of all these troubles… I must admit that our sewer network is a tangled maze of pipes, and its maintenance never was the top priority at city hall. Fortunately, working in the dark was never an issue for me, to the point that the other guys nicknamed me “Smokey, risky areas specialist”.

I saw suspicious smoke in the pipe ahead of me, and metal screeching noises started reverberating all around me. By reflex, I tightened the filter on my gas mask and tucked the wrench in my hand back into my toolbelt. When suddenly, multiple lines broke, and weird liquids and vapors started filling the sewer — and if you’ve ever been in a sewer, you can only imagine how bad a substance has to be to seem strange there. I had only one thought in my mind: Get out, and fast!

I started to run as fast as my waders and the sewage permitted, panting hard in my mask, which made breathing difficult in the best of conditions. Now the entire sewer network was crumbling.

Flexing my climbing skills to their max, I finally managed to scramble out of this hellhole and reached the surface.

But that was only to discover that Hell was already out here, too.

A spectacle of devastation greeted me: A thick black fog had pervaded the city, the streets were strewn with wrecked cars and even more littered with… motionless bodies.

Alone, I started to look for other survivors…

B-Mama “Schizoberserk” – Chilling time is over

“Henry, someone is at the door! Go see what they want!”

I was starting my day as usual, planted on the couch, sagging from all the time I spent on it. My favorite TV shopping show was about to start, and some idiot shows up at the door! No way was I getting up.

I know people thought I was hateful. They called me B-Mama, sometimes for “big”, sometimes for “bad”. I’m sure my tendency to yell at people over anything didn’t help.

But in the end, it didn’t matter.

I kept thinking about buying a weapon. I had already begun to take more… precautions, but I still did not feel safe enough. After all, you never know with the neighborhood and all the news about terrorism… I kept the shutters closed, the windows had been locked for a long time, and I recently had the alarm system upgraded. The only thing still missing was a weapon, although my husband’s baseball bat, a reminder of his teenage years, could be useful in a pinch. That’s why I always kept it within my reach, and when the doorbell rang, I quickly and automatically grabbed it.

Henry, my husband, went to open the door. Some random man mumbled something and left. I relaxed and sank even deeper into the couch.

Henry came back into the room with a package. It was the gas mask I had just ordered online; to make sure I was equipped in case of a biological attack. I immediately tried it on.

That’s when the wave of Fog hit, breathing its foul breath on everything on its path.

A few hours later, I woke up on the couch and painfully came to my senses, the gas mask still stuck onto my face. Before my eyes, a semblance of a man was bent over Henry’s lifeless body, hitting him relentlessly.

Rage grew within me, burning my cheeks, and completely blinding me. Overcome with fury, my strength was magnified as I started bludgeoning the creature with Henry’s bat. I hit and hit again, until I was sure that this… THING …would never get up.

This rage would never leave me, and from now on would be my most powerful ally.

JOHN “The Eye” – An unexpected outcome

“Everyone on the ground, this is a holdup! Move and I will blow your head off!
Tellers, hands above your heads! Guards, stand facing this wall, now!
And shut your mouths! I want to hear a pin drop.
You, over there, take us to the vault.”

Organizing a heist definitely is not easy, but this was not my first rodeo, and experience really does help. First rule: Avoid unnecessary troubles. Second rule: Get out fast and get out smoothly. Third rule: If the first and second rules can’t be achieved, do whatever it takes. This time, I had calmed down my crew of thugs; I had found something to make our escape without raising the alarm: a soporific grenade. Good ol’ sleeping gas.

Until then, everything was going according to plan: My accomplices were hauling out the last money bag, and I was positioning a gas mask on my face, ready to grab my grenade and put everyone into a dreamy sleep.

But suddenly, the air got really cold; the ground started trembling… and “BANG!” An explosion blew out all the bank’s windows. I didn’t even have a moment to think or wonder what was going on.

The force heaved me forward, and I tripped over… a bag or someone, I don’t remember. I tumbled, and my head slammed into something. I was out cold.

I woke up the next day, still in the bank, surrounded by scattered, half-burned dollar bills and… corpses.
